Impact documentation study of the i-Saksham Fellowship using qualitative methods

Background Context: The Saksham Education and Learning Foundation (i-Saksham) initiated a fellowship program to empower females as edu-leaders and leverage education as a medium of change in Munger and Jamui districts in Bihar. In the two-year fellowship program, the edu-leaders underwent educational and personal transformational training and are placed in government schools to support teachers in strengthening the teaching-learning processes

Objectives

The i-Saksham commissioned Development Solutions to conduct an impact documentation study to assess and document the impact of the fellowship program. The study was undertaken with the broader objective of identifying and documenting the impact of the fellowship program, as articulated by key stakeholders: 

  • Impact on the edu-leaders and their leadership journey (impact on self)
  • Impact on schools (Professional Level)- Educational processes and changes within the school systems
  • Impact on Community (building awareness and rapport in the community around the program) - Impact on the communities where the edu-leaders live and work

Approach and Methodology

  • Method/ Design: Qualitative semi-structured questionnaires
  • Key Respondents/ Informants: Edu-leaders, buddies, buddy mentors, teachers, community members 
  • Key Areas of Inquiry: Understanding the growth and development of the female Edu-leaders in terms of their own personal growth and leadership, professional growth and leadership in school contexts, and their role in community transformation and as community leaders and role models.

Impact

Insights from the assessment informed the scale-up of the program with the State Rural Livelihood Mission in Bihar
