Baseline Study for Demand Side Qualitative Research to Understand the Impact of COVID-19 on Livelihoods of MSE Operators

Background Context:

With funding from the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth and under the MAP I project, Centre for Financial Inclusion (CFI) conducted a six-wave, longitudinal survey in Colombia, India, Indonesia, and Nigeria. For every other month for one year, CFI surveyed micro- and small-enterprise (MSEs) clients at an Accion financial institution partner in each country. The purpose was to understand the extent to which COVID-19 had disrupted the livelihoods of MSE operators and how they were coping in response. The research concluded in December 2022. In 2023, the MAP program was renewed for another four years. In this next phase (MAP II), CFI will be focusing on two pillars of research: demand-side (i.e., MSEs) and the enabling environment. The research will take place in the capital cities of five countries: Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, and Nigeria.
