Baseline assessment households of Noore Ki Bhurj Gram Panchayat in Jodhpur using quantitative methodology

Background Context: Noore ki Bhurj Panchayat located in Bap Tehsil, Jodhpur District, is in western Rajasthan and part of the extreme-arid region of the state. It is characterized by sparse and scattered habitations, drought and scarcity and a poor state of formal literacy. Saurya Urja Company of Rajasthan, a public-private partnership initiative between IL&FS and the Government of Rajasthan has been allocated 6000 acres of land in the region to develop a solar park.
Objectives
Development Solutions was commissioned to undertake an initial scoping study and baseline assessment to provide strategies and possible CSR interventions. The objectives of the baseline study were as follows:
- Mapping socio-economic parameters of all households in the panchayat.
- Profiling of households on the following parameters – education, livelihoods, income, water and sanitation and health.
Approach and Methodology
- Method/ Design: A quantitative survey, using a closed-ended interview schedule was undertaken with households in the Noore ki Bhurj Panchayat.
- Key Respondents/ Informants: 1043 households in the Noore ki Bhurj Panchayat
- Key Areas of Inquiry: Demographic and household information, Agriculture and Livestock, Access to healthcare, Housing and assets, Access to Government programs education, livelihoods, income, water and sanitation and health
- Sample: 1043 households in the Noore ki Bhurj Panchayat
Impact
The project management support provided enabled the implementation team to achieve the project goals in Noore ki Bhurj community in Bap Panchayat, Jodhpur, which included establishing a mobile health service, upgrading education infrastructure in government schools, initiating a bridge education course for out-of-school girls, and establishing mobile veterinary services for local livestock management.
