Background ContextIn the context of the Reproductive Maternal Newborn Child Health + Adolescents (RMNCHA) and Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK) programs launched by the Government of India (GOI), the SRHR alliance has been identifying opportunities for advocating and promoting Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in the country.

Objectives

Development Solutions was commissioned to undertake a Gap Analysis of the RMNCHA program, to enable a strategic advantage at the national and state levels for advocacy and fundraising. The objectives of the assignment were as follows:  

  • Identify SRHR gaps in the RMNCHA program in India.  
  • To identify SRHR gaps related to issues of adolescents and young mothers, including gender.  
  • Identify possible areas and opportunities for advocacy for the SRHR alliance; and involvement of NGOs and Civil Society Organizations.

Approach and Methodology

  • Method/ Design: Desk review of documents on the RMNCHA strategy and secondary data available on the implementation of the RMNCHA.  
  • Key Respondents/ Informants: Adolescents
  • Key Areas of Inquiry: Adolescents in the context of SRHR; sexuality education, use of contraceptives, role of civil society in addressing gaps.

Impact

The analysis informed the program strategy of the SRHR Alliance in the context of the RMNCH+A approach of the GOI. Based on the analysis, needed adaptations/ modifications to ongoing programs of the alliance were made. The analysis also informed the design of future programs of the alliance.
